How eating a rainbow of foods improves your health

Why is eating a rainbow of foods so important?

Eating a rainbow of foods that includes at least 70% plant-based foods can benefit all of us by helping us live a longer, healthier life. When you eat a rainbow of colors every day, you are providing your body with essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients to sustain, repair, and aid in the proper growth of your body. Phytonutrients not only help protect plants from disease and boosts their immune system, but they also do that for us! The essential vitamins and minerals we absorb by eating 70% plant-based diets are Vitamin A, B, C, D, F, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, folate, and phosphorous, to name a few.

Each color has various health benefits.

For example:

Red fruits and vegetables are a good source of vitamin C, vitamin A, and potassium. Which helps our heart, eyes, and urinary health, has cancer-fighting abilities, and helps prevent disease. Some great sources are tomatoes, strawberries, watermelon, and raspberries.

Purple/blue plants such as blueberries, plums, and eggplant benefit our body by improving cognitive function, supporting our immune and bone health, and helping to fight against cancer.

Orange/yellow plants such as carrots, sweet potato, butternut squash, oranges, and grapefruit are rich in vitamin C and help with skin, eyes, and your immune system.

Green plants such as broccoli, spinach, kiwi, avocados, and cabbage are rich in vitamin K. This helps promote longevity and may help prevent osteoporosis.

White/brown plants such as onions, mushrooms, cauliflower, and garlic can help support immune, lymph, and heart health.

*I highly recommend always shopping the outer perimeter of the store in the organic section for the safest nutritious options.

* It is in our best interest to avoid food that has been genetically modified or sprayed with chemicals.
